Innovation: Cassava Uprooting Machine

Shyla Tom observed the intense physical effort required to manually uproot cassava, a task that is especially challenging for women farmers and older workers. To ease this burden, she developed an innovative cassava uprooting machine that simplifies the entire process.

Her device uses a user-friendly lever mechanism to gently lift cassava roots from the ground with minimal force, significantly reducing physical strain and the risk of injuries. This tool not only improves efficiency and reduces uprooting time but also makes cassava farming more inclusive and accessible. By addressing a common yet overlooked problem in root crop farming, Shyla Ben’s innovation stands as a practical and impactful solution that supports smallholder farmers and promotes dignity in agricultural labor.
